Just got my new Moo business cards in the mail yesterday and I absolutely love them - extremely quick delivery, great paper quality and a beautiful new blog logo designed by my friend, Samer.

Fashion in the news: August 23, 2010

Fashion in the News is a collection of articles and blog posts found online that catches my attention, and is in my humble opinion worth reading. Enjoy!

Finance & the Fashion Blogger: Ignore-ance (Dramatis Personae) – Ashe Mischief of Dramatis Personae wrote this entry back in April, but re-reading it again struck a chord with me as lately I’ve had to justify my spending and shopping habits – to myself and others. Fashion bloggers will “write about fashion – but we don’t often write or talk about the financial choices behind our sartorial choices.”

Alexander McQueen’s final dress (The Fashionist) – Alexander McQueen’s fall/winter 2010 collection was bittersweet – the clothing created was spectacular but the designer’s suicide was an unexpected blow to the fashion world. Now, it’s said that a “stunning silk charmeuse gown with a collar of sliver feathers (was worn) to Elton John's White Tie and Tiara Ball. Reports are now circulating that the dress was actually McQueen's final creation.”

American Apparel Shares Fall as Woes Rise (The New York Times) – “Shares in American Apparel plummeted 25.9 per cent on Tuesday, to $1.03. They have fallen 67 per cent this year.” Yet, when looking a back at American Apparel’s controversial advertisements, employee practices and the choices Dov Charney, chief executive, has made it doesn’t come as a surprise.

The Rise of the Blogger (WWD) – “Industry players said blogs have gained clout and relevance because they can post information about a company or show its product much faster than traditional media...  The blogs also serve as marketing tools that can go beyond conventional advertising, allowing brands to connect more closely with customers.”

The Souls of My Shoes has a new logo!

The Souls of My Shoes has a new logo!!! What do you think?

I’m not missing the old logo at all. When I first started this blog the original logo was a feeble attempt of using what little graphic design/Photoshop skills I have to draw up something that was simple, staking a tiny claim on the World Wide Web – it served its purpose then, but since the blog is just over one year old (in my mind) it needed to look more age appropriate.

Logo before (my sad attempt at graphic design)

My friend, Samer is a great graphic artist and he developed several mock-ups of the new logo. I told him the new logo was to “look good both online and in print, polished but also a bit arty, in black text.” He bore with me as we went through four designs until I decided on the final image.

Logo after (Samer’s graphic skills at work)

I am extremely happy with the end result and can’t wait to get my new business cards printed with the new logo.

If you like Samer’s work you can contact him via his LinkedIn profile or send me an e-mail at thesoulsofmyshoes[at]hotmail.com and I’ll forward your inquiry.

Fashion in the News: August 11, 2010

How long as it been since I’ve written a Fashion in the News entry? Too long!

Fashion in the News is a collection of articles and blog posts found online that catches my attention, and is in my humble opinion worth reading. Enjoy!

Inside Brazil’s booming fashion industry (Business of Fashion) – Brazil is a very dynamic country, its “rise as an important fashion market results from a complex set of interconnected conditions, many of which have been a long time in the making.”

Report From BlogHer 2010: The State of Fashion Blogging (Fashionista) – I like Cheryl Wischhover’s overview about the fashion blogging session at the 2010 BlogHer conference. She calls out to a lot of the topics and challenges fashion bloggers face, such as haulers and blogging as a hobby.

Liz Claiborne revamp drives upbeat outlook (Reuters) – Liz Claiborne Inc. hasn’t turned a profit in around three years and now the company is restructuring by “closing underperforming stores and hiking marketing spend.”

Fashion first as Marc Jacobs mulls clothes for larger women (Telegraph UK) – The debate continues on the production and publicizing of designer clothing for full figure women. Marc Jacobs shared in this dialogue with he designed the fall/winter 2010 collection for Louis Vuitton and he plans on taking this one step further with a line dedicated to plus size females.

Just a few minor adjustments

I’ll be making just a few minor adjustments to The Souls of My Shoes over the coming weeks. I feel that it’s time for a change to improve the site’s layout and appearance; new pages will be added to divvy up some content and hopefully I’ll have a new logo to show off.

I’d like to hear your feedback and thoughts so please leave comments.

Thanks,

Kimberly

Press: Roots Buzz likes my Douglas Coupland review

Roots gave me a nice mention on its blog, Roots Buzz, this past week about my review on its latest clothing collaboration with artist Douglas Coupland. Check out the entry, All Eyes are on RootsxDouglasCoupland!

** Blog entry update - I recently bought the motherboard computer pattern scarf from the Douglas Coupland collection off of Roots' Facebook store. It arrived within two days, made of 100 per cent silk, incredibly light and quite beautiful.

Happy (belated) one year anniversary to this blog!

Happy one year anniversary to The Souls of My Shoes!

Well... I’ve actually missed the “official” anniversary date by three days, however it’s been 368 days and 216 entries later, and I’m still blogging away about my love for fashion.

I’m not one to make a big deal out of special occasions pertaining to myself (see my un-birthday blog entry for details), but I’ve been on an extraordinary journey this past year and I couldn’t have done it without the support of my readers, family, friends and fellow bloggers. Thank you.

I’m not sure how I’ll mark this milestone but if you have any ideas feel free to share.

Here are too many more blog posts!

Press: fashion illustrator and blogger, Danielle Meder features me in "Fashion blog karma"

Fashion illustrator, blogger and friend extraordinaire, Danielle Meder has recently featured me in her latest blog entry titled, Fashion Blog Karma – The Souls of My Shoes.

I have been following Danielle’s blog long before I started fashion blogging and have always (and continued to) admire and respect her talents as an illustrator, creator of all things artistic and as a blogger. As mentioned in her post, we met while covering the spring/summer 2010 runway shows at LG Fashion Week. She has this uncanny ability to write brilliantly with a distinct voice that expresses her intellect and point-of-view. It is an honour to be featured on her blog.

Press: fashion stylist, Tricia Campbell Hall shares some fashion blogger love

My new good friend, Tricia Campbell Hall gave me an absolutely sweet mention on her blog recently.  Tricia is a woman of many talents: she is a  fashion blogger, Fashion Editor of FILLERmagazine and a freelance stylist who has worked with designer labels such as VAWK.

Check out her entry titled, Red Carpet | genie awards 2010.
