There’s been an energetic buzz in Toronto for the past year for the arrival of one of the world’s largest international multisport events, the TORONTO 2015 Pan Am/Parapan Am Games. For the months of July and August, more than 10,000 athletes and officials from across the Americas and the Caribbean will be coming to this city to test their skills and compete in the Pan Am Games (July 10-26) and the Parapan Am Games (August 7-15) in sports such as basketball to baseball, sailing to swimming and – my favourite event – track and field. Recently Lisa Ng of This Beautiful Day, a good friend and blogger bestie, told me about a project she is currently working on; to raise funds to build a water well for a community of 500+ people in a developing country with Generosity.org. Generosity.org creates an accountable water council from the villagers and trains them on how-to repair the well if it were to break down.
Living in a beautiful and developed country like Canada, we’re extremely lucky to have access to clean water on demand 24/7 for anything, from cooking to bathing and watering our lawns. People living in developing nations don’t have this type of access and must endure drinking and using contaminated water to survive – we’ve all seen the ads on TV and documentaries highlighting the plight many have to endure and it’s heartbreaking. Few things will get me up and out of bed at 5:00 a.m. in the morning. Actually, I can count on one hand what will; a designer sample sale, a trip to a tropical country, a yoga class and an intense pre-dawn workout with Nike.
Last month, I committed to the latter and took part in one of Nike’s legendary Nike Training Club (NTC) workout classes. The NTC classes are based on the company’s Nike + Training Club mobile app, which provides full body workouts for users. The app offers more than 100 exercises that are designed by Nike Master Trainers (think of a cross between an iron man and Olympian) and pro-athletes, ranging in length from 15-45 minutes, so you can get fit anywhere and on your own time. “It’s ludicrous I tell you! Ludicrous!” Those were the words I said to myself aloud when I read online that Cannes Film Festival organizers turned away several women in their 50s for not wearing high heels to a movie screening. Continue reading
It’s not often I get to write about food on The Souls of My Shoes, after all this is a fashion and footwear blog. However, every now and then an opportunity presents itself which allows me to step out of the box and in this case combine two major F words, fashion and food, because you definitely can’t have one without the other. Have you thought of what you’re going to buy your mom for Mother’s Day? Of course not! Like me you’ll probably wait until the last minute to run to the mall and find something, anything, to gift her. Bad, yes it is. However, what do you buy someone who has everything? And unless you’re willing to drop a wad of cash like a rapper then a budget friendly buy it is. Until now… Continue reading
Sneakers are everywhere! With the warmer weather upon us and the purveyance of fashionable kicks, from the runway to the street, it’s time to forgo buying a new pair of heels (for the time being) and slide your feet into chic and comfortable shoes that you can party in for hours.
One such sneaker that may catch your fetish for footwear is Keds’ newest collaboration with Canadian fashion brand PARTYSKIRTS. The partnership between the iconic American sneaker brand and sisters Lauren and Marial Armstrong, the duo behind PARTYSKIRTS, all started with a tweet on Twitter. The ladies were doing a tennis themed photoshoot for their own brand, which happened to include Keds; the images turned out so well they shared it online with the company and the rest, as they say, is history.
The Keds x PARTYSKIRTS collection consists of three styles, but my favourite is this black and white geometric print. It’s made from breathable canvas and outfitted with a rubber sole, both signature materials of Keds’ well-known and loved shoes. And if you like this striped print so much you can purchase the matching skirt from the Armstrong sisters too. Buy online.
Besides shoes and shopping one of the other great loves in my life is yoga. I started yoga on a complete whim; my sister told me Lululemon was opening a store in a nearby mall and that they offered free yoga classes. We went and loved it so much that attending these classes became a weekly Sunday morning ritual. More than six years later I’m still practicing, but now it’s in a yoga studio several times a week which I call my second home. Continue reading
I cannot tell a lie, I have a new footwear obsession and it’s the athletic sandal. I tried for a VERY long time to resist liking it, because it wasn’t meant to be a stylish shoe but strictly functional footwear.
That all changed when big name designers such as Phoebe Philo created her version of the sport sandal for Celine’s spring 2013 collection; she reinterpreted the Birkenstock sandal, a 60s and 90s throwback mainly reserved for tacky tourists and hippies. And the rest, as they say, is history; celebrities are now wearing the sport sandal loud and proud, and fast fashion retailers such as Zara are churning out stylish sport sandals faster than you can order a Big Mac at McDonalds.
And still I resisted. Anytime I was in a shoe store I would turn up my nose and make a funny face, as if I smelled mouldy cheese in disgust. This facial reaction quickly became an instinctual reflex anytime I would come across the sport sandal, especially when I saw someone wearing it out in public. However, like the Berlin Wall, my resolve crumbled and I recently purchased a pair. Gasp!
What shoe made me succumb this trend? It was the Charlette sandal from Lord & Taylor’s 424 FIFTH spring 2015 collection. This embellished number is simple with a capital S, thanks to its nude colouring and cross front design. The oversized crystals on the front are what did me in, because who doesn’t want to be wearing sophisticated bling 24/7? Plus, once I slipped my foot into said sandal the smooth and comfortable leather design felt like heaven. Buy online.
He came, he saw and he conquered Toronto. Who am I referring to? Why none other than the famous and fabulous Karl Lagerfeld. Uncle Karl, as he is affectionately known, came to the city recently to celebrate the launch of Art Shoppe Lofts + Condos. It’s one of the city’s latest upscale condo properties going up in the Yonge and Eglinton area, and the celebrity designer is commissioned to create the interior of the properties’ lobbies.
