I cannot tell a lie, I have a new footwear obsession and it’s the athletic sandal. I tried for a VERY long time to resist liking it, because it wasn’t meant to be a stylish shoe but strictly functional footwear.
That all changed when big name designers such as Phoebe Philo created her version of the sport sandal for Celine’s spring 2013 collection; she reinterpreted the Birkenstock sandal, a 60s and 90s throwback mainly reserved for tacky tourists and hippies. And the rest, as they say, is history; celebrities are now wearing the sport sandal loud and proud, and fast fashion retailers such as Zara are churning out stylish sport sandals faster than you can order a Big Mac at McDonalds.
And still I resisted. Anytime I was in a shoe store I would turn up my nose and make a funny face, as if I smelled mouldy cheese in disgust. This facial reaction quickly became an instinctual reflex anytime I would come across the sport sandal, especially when I saw someone wearing it out in public. However, like the Berlin Wall, my resolve crumbled and I recently purchased a pair. Gasp!
What shoe made me succumb this trend? It was the Charlette sandal from Lord & Taylor’s 424 FIFTH spring 2015 collection. This embellished number is simple with a capital S, thanks to its nude colouring and cross front design. The oversized crystals on the front are what did me in, because who doesn’t want to be wearing sophisticated bling 24/7? Plus, once I slipped my foot into said sandal the smooth and comfortable leather design felt like heaven. Buy online.
He came, he saw and he conquered Toronto. Who am I referring to? Why none other than the famous and fabulous Karl Lagerfeld. Uncle Karl, as he is affectionately known, came to the city recently to celebrate the launch of Art Shoppe Lofts + Condos. It’s one of the city’s latest upscale condo properties going up in the Yonge and Eglinton area, and the celebrity designer is commissioned to create the interior of the properties’ lobbies. Any time see the colour baby blue I’m immediately transported to the 1990s; to a time when pastel colours were first in vogue and everyone was dressing in shades of head to toe pink, green, yellow and baby blue. Ahh… those were the days!
I’ve always had a fondness for baby blue; in the 90s I painted my room this colour, as well as my nails, and once owned the most stylish baby blue ensemble, a pair of flared low-rise pants with a button down top. So, you can imagine, seeing this ballerina flat by Miu Miu made me nostalgic. I love the smoothness of the leather, soft blue shade and transparent trim, which gives this elegant shoe a modern-retro feel. Buy online.
I’ve always viewed sports sandals as a necessary evil; on the practical side, they’re great for athletes and for putting on in a moment’s notice when you have to run and errand. On the other hand, these pair of shoes was reluctantly adopted by mankind after all the other stylish shoes hijacked the fashion gene from the footwear game. Continue reading
I’ve always been the type of person who adheres to the wise saying “Never judge a book by its cover,” because you don’t know what’s inside, literally and metaphorically. However, when it comes to shopping things go into different territory; I always rely on my eyes and intuition whenever I’m on the hunt for new clothes or shoes. Call it a keen fashion sense or just plain instinct, but I know within 10 to 20 seconds whether a pair of shoes and I are destined to be together. However, there are the odd and rare moments when my instincts are off and I experienced just that very recently.
Last weekend I partnered with Town Shoes for a post-fashion week contest and celebration; my winners (Pamela and Meghan) and I attended the retailer’s Step Into Town event at The Toronto Eaton Centre. There we enjoyed a spring trend presentation by the amazing Peter Papapetrou and afterward, headed to the Town Shoes store to partake in some much needed retail therapy. Pamela gravitated to a pair of Ted Baker sneakers that I wasn’t initially fond of, but when she tried them on I changed my mind. These are the type of shoes you have to slip your feet into to appreciate; the graphic floral print, leather trim and high top design is outstanding giving it a feminine look yet remaining edgy and street. Wondering if she bought them? Of course she did! And I might too. Buy online.
Guess what day it is today? It’s FRI-YAY! And the best way to celebrate the start of the weekend is with a designer shoe and soundtrack to match that will make your heart sing. Now, I’m not talking about some soft pop tune by Hilary Duff circa 2003. Hell no! This calls for a jaw dropping and foot stomping heel that will turn heads. And I have just the thing for you, peep this beauty below.
Aptly dubbed ‘Wild Thing’, this ravishing red sandal by Aquazzura is the type of shoe you want to be wearing when you unexpectedly run into your ex-boyfriend. Picture this: you walk into a bar, looking fly and wearing your best dress. Not even five seconds into said bar you see your ex-boyfriend, but instead of meeting him there is a 6’4ft tall piece of handsome a few chairs over waiting for you. You walk past your ex, ignoring him, and slide into the seat next to your hotter than hot date as the red tassels on this heel taunts your ex, making him regret for being such a dick to you in the past. All the while the classic 1960s rock song by The Troggs plays in the background, of course. Wild thing I think I love you. Buy online.
In just over a week the most fashionable time of the year in the city will be taking place. What is that you ask? Why it’s World MasterCard Fashion Week (WMCFW)! This season designers will be showing off their fall/winter 2015 collections and I, for one, can’t wait to see what Toronto’s finest creative fashion minds has in store for us. Continue reading
A wise woman once said, “The higher the heel the better you feel” and once you look at my latest Shoe of the Moment pick for today you’ll agree whole heartedly.
Two words can be used to describe this shoe by British designer Stella McCartney and that is “Holy platform!” Now, to be honest, I’ve never been a fan of the platform shoe with a sole that’s thicker than an entire Encyclopedia Britannica set. Why you ask? Imagine walking in this thing, alone they’re a major tripping hazard guaranteeing a twisted or, much worse, a broken ankle. Yikes! And don’t even think about running in it.
However, there are times where exceptions can be made and this is one of them. Just look at how beautifully balanced the masculine silhouette and cool shades of white, wood and silver work harmoniously together of this derby shoe. Plus, the smooth transition between each section of the shoe, from metallic upper to the rubber bottom, is a perfect contrast to the jagged sole.
Of course, this silver stunner doesn’t come cheap; it retails for €555, convert that into Canadian dollars and you have an empty chequing account. However, you and I can hope and dream that the LOTTO 649 tickets we bought earlier this week will guarantee our winning the $50 million jackpot. Stella McCartney platform shoes for all! Buy online.
You already know my penchant for high heels, but for the past two years sneakers have been claiming new real estate in my heart that has me rethinking of putting on my favourite Sophia Webster heels – gasp! The thought is shocking, I know, especially since I consider the designer my fantasy BFF.
We’re now 10 glorious days into March and with the coming of spring it’s time to add a new pair (or two) of shoes to your closet. And yes, I’ll make just about any excuse to buy footwear. At one point during your day today you looked up the temperature outside, whether if it was before you left for work in the morning or to run a quick errand at lunch. If you happen to live in a part of the world where the weather is minus anything – Toronto is currently -13°C with the wind chill making it feel like -19°C – the words, “Get me out of this crazy cold climate!” came out of your mouth. As a result, I and many people I know, have found themselves visiting travel websites, such as Expedia, in the hopes of discovering a crazy all-inclusive deal to the Caribbean so we can make our great escape south.
With March Break quickly approaching, it’s just a matter of time before the perfect vacation deal pops up on your computer screen and you hit the ‘Buy now’ button. When you do you’ll have to start packing a suitcase and, of course, buy a new pair of shoes to celebrate your soon-to-be sunny getaway. One such pair I came across you (and your wallet) will love is this slip-on sneaker by Joe Fresh. Made from canvas and rubber, this floral printed number has all the characteristics of a great vacation shoe; it’s packable, comfortable to wear when you’re exploring the local sites or going to the beach, and will match anything in your summer wardrobe. Oh, and did I mention that it only costs $24? Yes, you need to buy it online now.
