It’s been so long since I attended a music festival, so long in fact that I can’t recall the last time I ventured to one. Recently, all of that changed when Reebok Canada invited me to the first annual Way Home Music and Arts Festival.
Held in Oro-Medonte – just two hours north of Toronto – this new music festival had people in and around the city buzzing for months especially with its line-up of musical acts by artists such as Neil Young + Promise of the Real, Kendrick Lamar and Sam Smith.
The good people at Reebok Canada invited me and a mini bus load of online influencers from the city to spend a day at the festival and to check out a performance by the company’s global ambassador Kendrick Lamar, as he headlined the Saturday night performance.
Preparations for spending an entire day at a music festival far away from home requires a lot of planning. You have to pack for any and all types of weather conditions such as humidity, heat and, especially, rain. Plus, you have to be comfortable and in my case having the right footwear was a must! Initially, one might opt for a pair of sandals but instead Reebok geared our feet up with a pair of classic kicks; my festival footwear was a pair of all white Reebok Princess, you can never go wrong with wearing comfortable sneakers to an event such as this – leave the cute heels at home ladies.
Hanging out at the Reebok booth was a lot of fun, we had a birds eye view of the entire festival grounds and saw other festival goers taking part in Reebok’s design challenge; where they put their artistry to the test to paint and personalize their pair of the company’s classic kicks.
Later on that evening we were whisked away – as if we were partaking in a black ops missions – to a secret location on the grounds to meet Kenridck Lamar himself. It all happened in a blur to be honest, we walked through a dark forest and marsh area then waited like ducks in a pond for him to appear. The photo op with the rapper happened so quickly; one minute, he was there and next he was gone – poof! It was cool to meet him yet awkward. What do you say to someone you’ll only ever meet once? I opted for a hand shake and told him my name.
Not too long afterwards Kendrick took to the stage and, I have to be honest, I was impressed. Prior to the festival, I was lukewarm to his music but my opinion changed after seeing him perform; he has mad skills, flow and had the crowd jumping up and down.
My first music festival experience was pretty amazing. Thank you Reebok for taking good care of me and my feet! Until next year.
