He came, he saw and he conquered Toronto. Who am I referring to? Why none other than the famous and fabulous Karl Lagerfeld. Uncle Karl, as he is affectionately known, came to the city recently to celebrate the launch of Art Shoppe Lofts + Condos. It’s one of the city’s latest upscale condo properties going up in the Yonge and Eglinton area, and the celebrity designer is commissioned to create the interior of the properties’ lobbies.
When I first learned Uncle Karl was lending his design skills for a condo project in the city I had to stop and (metaphorically) do a double take, because the news seemed surreal. When I later learn he was boarding his private jet, to fly across the Atlantic Ocean, to make a personal appearance for the condo’s launch party I had to suppress a Justin Bieber fan girl-like shriek from escaping my mouth.
The days leading up to the launch party was fraught with wardrobe worry. Numerous text messages went back and forth between myself and several friends, who were attending the event, to figure out what to wear when you’re meeting a legendary designer like Karl Lagerfeld? Hashtag #FashionGirlProblems. I eventually settled on a printed Christopher Kane dress with pink neon piping and my faithful Sophia Webster heels.
So, what was it like to be in the presence of Uncle Karl? I captured some details of the event here but it to put it plainly, it was a mad house. A crushing wave of people trailed him wherever he went in order to capture a picture and, even, snap a selfie with the designer. Myself and blogger besties Nelia and Sharon were determined to get within arm’s length of him and to our surprise we did even better!
As Uncle Karl passed by us we were able to get him to stop and autograph Nelia’s Karl brooch and Sharon’s Chanel bag. It all happened so quickly and the aftereffects of the split second interaction with the head designer of Chanel and Fendi, as well as his namesake label, lingered for hours. In hindsight, I should have brought a fashion book I own that is authored by the designer to the event, but decided to leave it at home thinking I’d never get him to sign it. Boy was I wrong! I should have known when Nelia, Sharon and I join forces together anything can happen. However, I still have the memories of that day, which I’m content with because not everyone can say they met and came this close to Karl Lagerfeld.
