How many times have you looked into your closet to pick out a pair of shoes to match with an outfit only to realize that nothing goes? I have this dilemma often and wish I had a fairy godmother who could magically appear and make me a pair of shoes to go with a tie-dyed, suede VAWK dress that’s been sitting in my closest for nearly two years.
With advancements in technology many companies now give you the opportunity to design your own shoes. You’ll be surprised (like I was) that there are unlimited options for you to channel your inner Christian Louboutin and make the most amazing heels. From high heels to high-tops, here are eight brands that offer made-to-orders shoes.
Converse has a Design Your Own program offering adults and kids the opportunity to customize sneakers. Die-hard Chuck Taylor aficionados can chose from 11 blank canvas styles and an array of colours and prints. From the time you place your order, it’ll take approximately two to three weeks to create the shoes and then ship out.
Price: adults starting from $75 USD; kids starting from $50 USD.
Shipping: Converse.com (U.S.) doesn’t ship to Canada or allow you to enter a separate billing address. If you’re ready to go the distance then ask a trusted friend or family member who lives in the States to temporarily foot the bill and hold your shoes. U.K. residents are in luck because Converse’s U.K. website caters to you.
Supporters of Canadian fashion can click over to Joker’s Closet and begin designing your own shoes. However, if the process seems a little daunting CEO and Founder Ashley Ebner advised that you to “‘play’ with combinations and have fun in the process until you find something that works with your mood and style.” There are currently six, fashion forward styles available and every season new styles, along with colours and materials, are introduced. The entire process, from fabrication to shipping, will take about three to four weeks.
Price: starting from $285 USD.
Shipping: 169 countries worldwide, including Canada!

Reebok’s YourReebok program launched last November in Canada giving sneaker heads north of border the opportunity to become their own footwear designer. The program has a smaller range of customizable shapes to choose from compared to its athletic competitors – women have six styles, men have nine and kids have five – but that doesn’t mean your creative design skills are limited; practically every part of the shoe is up for interpretation from the sole to the laces and the logo. Custom orders typically take three to five weeks to create and deliver.
